Best Drinks by Sodium
Drink mixes ranked by sodium per serving - the format that carries most of your race-day salt, whether you planned it or not.
Unlike gels, carbohydrate drinks tend to bring meaningful sodium, and the spread is wide: the mixes we track average around 290 mg per serving and the saltier endurance options run to 750 mg. Since your hourly loss is sweat rate multiplied by a sweat sodium concentration that ranges from about 300 to 1,500 mg per litre between athletes, the bottle is a good place to cover a large share of it.
It is also the easiest place to double-count. If your drink already carries 500 mg per bottle, you do not need high-sodium gels and electrolyte tabs stacked on top. Set the target first, then let the drink contribution count against it. Drinking large volumes of low-sodium fluid over many hours is the classic route to hyponatremia, and overshooting in the other direction is mostly wasted money.
