Best Gels by Sodium
Gels ranked by sodium per sachet, for heavy and salty sweaters who want the salt in the same wrapper as the carbs.
Sweat sodium spans roughly 300 to 1,500 mg per litre across athletes, with some testing above 2,000, so two people at the same sweat rate can lose several times different amounts of salt in the same race. Your hourly loss is sweat rate multiplied by concentration, and replacing 50 to 100 percent of it is the working target. That spread, not an average, is what a sodium plan has to match.
High-sodium gels earn their place when the day is hot, the race is long, or you are the athlete leaving white salt rings on your kit. They are not a cramp cure - current evidence puts exercise-associated cramps down to neuromuscular fatigue rather than salt depletion - and more is not automatically safer. Count what your bottle already carries before you stack a salty gel on top of a salty drink.
